Mt. Ashland Ski Area is set to reintroduce youth-focused career exploration with the launch of its new “Exploring Post” program, aimed at students between the ages of 16 and 20. The initiative, which builds on the success of the area’s previous youth programs like the 7,500′ Crew and Youth Summer Service, provides a structured, hands-on experience for young people interested in careers in the ski and outdoor recreation industry.
Through the Exploring Post, participants will gain valuable insight into various aspects of Mt. Ashland’s operations. This includes job shadowing opportunities across departments like mountain operations, ski patrol, guest services, and environmental stewardship. The program places an emphasis on hands-on learning and skill development, offering an immersive view of what goes into managing a community ski area.
“This new Exploring Post will expand on our youth programming, giving students a chance to learn about the ski industry as a career,” said Andrew Gast, General Manager of Mt. Ashland Ski Area. He emphasized that the program represents a commitment to both community service and industry growth by engaging young people and providing them with leadership and creative skills applicable in a variety of future endeavors.
An informational open house for interested students and their families is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, at the Talent Library, located at 101 Home Street in Talent, Oregon. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m., offering attendees an opportunity to meet Mt. Ashland staff, learn more about the program structure, and ask questions.
The Exploring Post program will officially kick off this winter, with meetings beginning in advance of the 2024-2025 ski season. Participants will receive a uniform and ski privileges as part of their involvement. Annual enrollment for the program is set at $120, though financial assistance is available to ensure that cost does not deter interested students. For those looking to learn more about the Exploring Post or secure financial support, additional information is available at www.mtashland.com/exploring.
Owned and operated by the nonprofit Mt. Ashland Association, Mt. Ashland Ski Area operates under a special use permit from the U.S. Forest Service. Its mission is to provide and promote healthy alpine recreation, with the Exploring Post representing its latest effort to invest in community engagement and youth development.
For young people interested in the ski industry or a future in outdoor recreation, the Exploring Post presents a unique chance to step into a professional setting and gain meaningful experience.
