Young readers in Wolf Creek will have the opportunity to meet some of the people who help protect their community when the Josephine Community Library hosts a special edition of its Neighborhood Heroes Story Squad later this week.
From 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 26, the Wolf Creek Branch Library, located at 102 Ruth Avenue, will welcome members of the Wolf Creek Volunteer Fire Department for an afternoon that blends literacy, creativity, and community connection. Designed for children and families, the free program invites participants to enjoy storytime, take part in a hands-on craft activity, and learn more about the firefighters who serve the Wolf Creek area throughout the year.
Rather than simply reading to the audience, local firefighters will share a story connected to their profession, offering children a glimpse into the important work they perform both during emergencies and in everyday community life. The program also gives families an opportunity to ask questions, helping young attendees better understand the responsibilities of volunteer firefighters while creating positive, personal interactions outside of emergency situations.
The event reflects a growing emphasis among libraries to serve as community gathering places where learning extends beyond bookshelves. By introducing children to the people who work behind the scenes to keep neighborhoods safe, the program encourages curiosity while helping build trust and familiarity with local first responders.
For many children, meeting firefighters in a relaxed setting can replace uncertainty with confidence. Seeing firefighters without flashing lights or emergency equipment allows young visitors to become comfortable asking questions, learning about fire safety, and understanding how emergency responders help people during difficult situations.
Neighborhood Heroes Story Squad also highlights the value of volunteerism in rural Southern Oregon communities, where volunteer fire departments play an essential role in protecting homes, businesses, forests, and public spaces. Events like these give residents a chance to recognize the dedication of those who generously donate their time and expertise to serve their neighbors.
The storytime is open to everyone and is offered at no cost. Families do not need a Josephine Community Library card to attend, making the event accessible to residents throughout the area as well as visitors looking for family-friendly activities during the summer break.
The June 26 gathering is one of many activities scheduled as part of the Josephine Community Library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program, themed “Plant a Seed, Read.” The annual program encourages children and families to continue reading throughout the summer months while participating in educational activities that foster creativity, exploration, and lifelong learning.
Community support continues to play a significant role in making these seasonal programs possible. This year’s Summer Reading Program is sponsored by Evergreen Federal Bank, Grants Pass Active Club, Josephine Community Library Foundation, Oregon Pacific Financial Advisor, and the State Library of Oregon, reflecting a collaborative effort to promote literacy and educational enrichment across Josephine County.
Library officials encourage families looking for an enjoyable and educational summer outing to attend Friday’s event, where books, community service, and imagination come together for an afternoon designed to inspire young readers while celebrating the hometown heroes who help keep Wolf Creek safe.
