A traffic collision involving Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been referred to prosecutors in Northern California after investigators concluded there is sufficient evidence to seek a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge stemming from a crash involving a parked vehicle.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon in the Napa County community of Yountville, where authorities said Pelosi was driving a brown convertible when it struck an unoccupied vehicle legally parked along Yount Street. The impact caused significant damage to the parked vehicle, but no injuries were reported because no one was inside at the time of the collision.
According to investigators, a witness observed the crash shortly after 2:30 p.m. and contacted emergency dispatchers after seeing Pelosi’s vehicle briefly stop before continuing down the roadway. Sheriff’s deputies later located the disabled convertible approximately one-quarter mile from the scene after it became inoperable due to damage sustained in the collision.
Investigators said Pelosi acknowledged realizing that his vehicle had struck something but indicated he did not know exactly what had been hit and continued driving until the vehicle could no longer be operated. Following the investigation, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office determined there was probable cause to recommend a misdemeanor charge alleging he left the scene of a property-damage collision. The case has since been forwarded to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether formal criminal charges will be filed.
Authorities emphasized that alcohol was not a factor in the incident. A preliminary alcohol screening conducted during the investigation registered no measurable alcohol, allowing deputies to rule out impaired driving. Because the collision involved property damage only and resulted in no injuries, Pelosi was not arrested at the scene, a procedure consistent with many misdemeanor traffic investigations in California.
The investigation has also drawn attention because of Pelosi’s age. At 86, he falls within a growing population of older licensed drivers across the United States. Law enforcement officials confirmed they will submit a driver re-evaluation request to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a routine administrative step that allows the agency to determine whether additional medical or driving evaluations are warranted following certain traffic incidents involving elderly motorists. Such referrals do not automatically result in the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license but are intended to ensure drivers remain capable of safely operating a motor vehicle.
As Americans continue living longer and remaining behind the wheel well into their later years, transportation agencies have increasingly focused on balancing personal independence with public safety. California evaluates each referral individually, considering medical information, driving history and other relevant factors rather than relying solely on a driver’s age. Many older adults continue to drive safely for decades, while others may require additional testing or restrictions depending on their individual circumstances.
A spokesperson for the Pelosi family said Paul Pelosi has apologized to the owner of the damaged vehicle and intends to pay for the repairs resulting from the collision. The family has declined to comment further while the matter remains under review.
The latest investigation also recalls Pelosi’s widely publicized 2022 misdemeanor drunken driving case in Napa County. Authorities have stressed, however, that the current incident is entirely separate from that earlier case and that investigators found no evidence of alcohol or drug impairment in connection with this collision.
The Napa County District Attorney’s Office will now examine the investigative report, witness statements and applicable California law before determining whether to proceed with formal misdemeanor charges. Until that decision is made, the matter remains under prosecutorial review, and no charges have yet been formally filed.
