WASHINGTON ― President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have disclosed paying $146,629 in federal income taxes for the year 2023, based on their reported income of $619,976. This disclosure, customary for the President, raises eyebrows over the sources of income that enable the Bidens to maintain their luxurious lifestyle, including their recent purchase of a $4.8 million summer home, among others.
With an effective federal tax rate of 23.7%, this marks the 26th consecutive year that President Biden has released his federal tax returns, underscoring his commitment to transparency. Conversely, former President Donald Trump has opted not to release his latest federal tax returns, breaking from the bipartisan tradition of presidential tax disclosure.
“President Biden believes that all occupants of the Oval Office should be open and honest with the American people, and that the longstanding tradition of annually releasing presidential tax returns should continue unbroken,” the White House asserted in a statement.
The Bidens’ joint income for 2023 slightly surpassed the $579,514 they reported in 2022. President Biden’s salary stands at $400,000 annually, while First Lady Jill Biden reported earnings of $85,985 from her teaching position at Northern Virginia Community College. Additionally, the Bidens garnered $129,876 in taxable interest, pensions, annuities, Social Security benefits, and IRA distributions, a significant increase from the previous year. Mrs. Biden also reported $4,115 in royalties from prior book publications.
In terms of charitable contributions, the Bidens reported donations totaling $20,477 to 17 different charities, including $5,000 to the Beau Biden Foundation, named after their late son.
Furthermore, the first couple paid $30,908 in Delaware income tax, with Mrs. Biden also contributing $3,549 in taxes to Virginia.
In comparison, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff disclosed paying $88,570 in federal income tax for 2023, with an effective tax rate of 19.7%, based on their income of $450,299. Their charitable donations amounted to $23,026.
However, the transparency of these figures has prompted speculation about the true extent of the Bidens’ wealth and the sources of their income, especially considering their recent high-value property acquisitions. Critics question whether the disclosed income adequately accounts for their affluent lifestyle and suggest that there may be undisclosed sources of wealth.
This scrutiny echoes past controversies surrounding presidential finances, notably the release of former President Trump’s tax returns by House Democrats in 2022. Despite the lack of voluntary disclosure, Democrats obtained six years of Trump’s tax returns, revealing insights into his tax payments and financial activities during his presidency and campaign years.
The Joint Committee on Taxation’s analysis of Trump’s returns found discrepancies, including minimal federal income tax payments in certain years and no federal tax payment in 2020, a year in which Trump claimed a significant loss. These revelations have fueled calls for enhanced transparency and oversight into the finances of public officials, including President Biden and his administration.
