Pennsylvania-based Savencia Cheese USA has broadened a recall involving several of its soft cheese products after discovering that processing equipment used in manufacturing may have been contaminated with listeria. The expanded recall now includes Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, marking the seventh product on the list.
The recall affects a limited batch of select soft-ripened cheeses distributed to retail locations in twelve states, specifically California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, and Washington, according to a spokesperson for Savencia Cheese USA.
As of Tuesday, there have been no confirmed cases of illness related to these cheeses, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, health officials stress the potential risks associated with listeria, a bacterium that can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections. While most healthy individuals may only experience mild symptoms, such as fever and gastrointestinal discomfort, more severe symptoms can occur in young children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems. Pregnant women are also particularly vulnerable, as listeria infections can result in serious complications, including stillbirth, miscarriage, or infection in newborns.
The FDA and Savencia Cheese USA are working together to ensure public safety by advising consumers in affected states to avoid consuming the recalled products and to dispose of any remaining items. Customers are also encouraged to check with local retailers for specific details on returning or exchanging recalled items.
