There are taco spots that serve food, and then there are places that create an experience. Tucked along South Riverside Avenue in Medford, Backyard Community Food Court manages to do both, blending creativity, comfort, and community into one of the most memorable foodie stops in Southern Oregon.
From the moment you walk into the outdoor-style gathering space, the atmosphere immediately sets the tone. Backyard Community Food Court feels less like a traditional restaurant and more like the kind of place where strangers become regulars after a single visit. The energy is relaxed, welcoming, and full of personality. Music drifts through the seating area, conversations bounce from table to table, and the scent of grilled meats and fresh ingredients hangs in the air like an invitation to stay longer than planned.
But while the vibe pulls you in, the food is what keeps your attention.
During my visit, Terry brought out a taco sampler plate that quickly turned into one of the best taco experiences I have had anywhere in Southern Oregon. Each taco arrived with its own identity, its own flavor profile, and its own reason to come back.
The standout of the night was easily the pastrami taco. At first glance, it sounds like an unusual concept, but after the first bite, it makes perfect sense. Imagine the rich, savory flavor of a perfectly crafted Reuben sandwich transformed into taco form without losing any of the magic. The pastrami was tender and flavorful, layered with textures and ingredients that somehow balanced comfort food and street food at the same time. It was bold, creative, and honestly unforgettable.
Then came the appropriately named Magic Chicken taco. The chicken was cooked perfectly, juicy without being heavy, and seasoned with enough flavor to stand on its own without overwhelming the taco. Every bite delivered a combination of freshness, spice, and smoky depth that kept drawing me back in. It was the kind of taco that disappears before you realize you already finished it.
The fish taco proved that simplicity still matters. Grilled just right with seasoning that complemented rather than buried the natural flavor of the fish, it carried a clean, balanced taste that felt fresh from start to finish. Too often fish tacos get overloaded with sauces and toppings trying to compensate for weak preparation. That was not the case here. This taco trusted the ingredients to speak for themselves, and they absolutely did.
The shrimp taco rounded out the sampler with a Cajun kick that hit the perfect middle ground between flavor and heat. The seasoning added personality without overpowering the shrimp itself. Every element worked together instead of competing for attention, something that seems increasingly rare in restaurants trying too hard to stand out.
What makes Backyard Community Food Court special is not just the quality of the tacos, but the obvious passion behind the operation. Terry’s enthusiasm for food, people, and creating a memorable experience comes through in every detail. There is authenticity here that cannot be manufactured. It feels genuine, local, and refreshingly unpretentious.
Southern Oregon has no shortage of places claiming to serve great tacos, but Backyard Community Food Court delivers something far more memorable than hype. It delivers flavor, creativity, and an atmosphere that makes you want to pull up a chair, order another round, and stay awhile.
