Local teenagers will have an opportunity to explore creativity, develop new skills, and connect with their peers this summer through a youth-led art program returning to Josephine Community Library branches in Grants Pass and the Illinois Valley.
The Teen Bad Artists Club, part of the library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program, offers a welcoming environment where participants ages 13 to 17 can gather to create art, enjoy music, share ideas, and build friendships. Designed to encourage self-expression rather than artistic perfection, the series places an emphasis on participation, creativity, and community engagement.
What makes the program particularly distinctive is that it was created and organized by teen volunteers. From developing project concepts to preparing promotional materials and leading activities, local youth have taken an active role in shaping the experience for their peers. Library officials say the volunteer-led approach gives participants an opportunity to learn from one another while fostering leadership and collaboration among area teens.
Throughout the summer, participants will explore a variety of hands-on projects ranging from comic creation and clay art to painting and design challenges. Snacks will be available during each session, and attendees can collect weekly stickers while taking part in the activities. Teens are encouraged to attend as many sessions as they choose, with no requirement to participate in the entire series.
The program begins June 18 in Grants Pass with a DIY Comics workshop. Additional activities scheduled throughout the summer include terracotta pot painting, clay art projects, bookmark creation, a LEGO challenge, and miniature art sessions. Several activities will also be offered at the Illinois Valley branch, expanding access to youth throughout Josephine County.
Library leaders view the program as more than an arts and crafts series. By providing a space where teenagers can gather in a supportive setting, the club creates opportunities for social connection during the summer months while encouraging creativity and personal expression.
The Teen Bad Artists Club is sponsored by the Josephine County Cultural Coalition and is one of several programs offered through the library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program, themed “Plant a Seed, Read.” The broader summer initiative encourages readers of all ages to stay engaged with books and learning throughout the season while participating in educational and recreational activities offered by the library.
Support for the Summer Reading Program is provided through partnerships with Evergreen Federal Bank, Grants Pass Active Club, Josephine Community Library Foundation, Oregon Pacific Financial Advisors, and the State Library of Oregon.
All Teen Bad Artists Club sessions are free and open to the public. A library card is not required to participate, making the program accessible to all interested teens throughout the community.
