Republican Representative Andy Ogles from Tennessee has introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris, citing her handling of immigration issues at the southern border and her public statements regarding President Joe Biden’s fitness for office.
The first article of impeachment accuses Vice President Harris of a “willful refusal to uphold immigration laws,” alleging negligence in her role overseeing border security and immigration policies. Harris was appointed by President Biden to address the root causes of immigration early in his administration.
The second article charges Harris with a “breach of public trust,” claiming she misled the public and Congress about President Biden’s physical and cognitive health. This comes amidst Republican assertions that Harris has been covering up concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities and calls for her to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a president deemed unfit for office by the vice president and the Cabinet.
These calls for action intensified following President Biden’s recent six-day isolation in Delaware due to a COVID-19 diagnosis. Biden, who faced considerable pressure after a contentious debate performance, announced his decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race nearly a month later.
While Congress cannot directly invoke the 25th Amendment, Ogles’ resolution aims to increase pressure on Harris and the Cabinet to consider such a measure. This move has seen minimal resistance from moderate Republicans, reflecting growing bipartisan concern over the president’s capacity to fulfill his duties.
