Sometimes you just need a good lunch. Nothing complicated, nothing overly fancy, and definitely nothing that leaves you wondering why you spent the money. Today, Wok Star absolutely delivered.
I went with the Teriyaki Chicken Bento, and I have to say, it was straight fire. From the moment the plate arrived, it looked like the kind of lunch that was going to get the job done, and it did not disappoint. The portions were generous, everything looked fresh, and there was a nice balance between the main course and the sides.
The chicken is grilled right on site, and you can taste the difference. It had that freshly grilled flavor that is hard to fake, with a little char around the edges while still staying tender and juicy inside. The teriyaki sauce had the right blend of sweet and savory without overpowering the chicken. There was enough sauce to give every bite plenty of flavor, but not so much that the chicken was swimming in it. That balance made the grilled flavor of the meat stand out instead of disappearing beneath the sauce.
The rice was perfectly cooked and paired nicely with the chicken. It was simple, fluffy, and exactly what you want alongside teriyaki. The fresh cabbage salad added some crunch and a lighter element to the meal, which helped balance out the richer flavors of the chicken and sauce. Then came the spicy sauce. That little addition brought some heat and extra flavor to the plate without taking over the entire meal. Put a little of everything together in one bite, and the whole bento really worked.
This was one of those meals where you take the first few bites and immediately think, “Yep, this was a damn good decision.”
What I appreciated most was that the meal felt like an actual lunch. I was not walking away hungry an hour later or wondering where the rest of my food went. The combination of grilled chicken, rice, cabbage salad, and sauce made for a filling meal without feeling ridiculously heavy. There is something to be said for getting a plate of food that is straightforward, fresh, flavorful, and satisfying without trying too hard to be something it is not.
If you are looking for a lunch that checks those boxes, Wok Star needs to be on your list. The Teriyaki Chicken Bento certainly earned my approval, and based on this visit, I will be back to see what else is coming off that grill.
