The City of Grants Pass is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on its Historical Buildings and Sites Commission, a citizen advisory body that plays a central role in protecting and promoting the community’s historic character. The open position is designated for a representative from the local historical society and will run through May 3, 2027.
The commission serves as an advisory panel on matters involving historic preservation within the city’s Urban Growth Boundary. Its responsibilities include reviewing proposed exterior alterations to structures located within a designated Historic District or to properties that have been formally recognized for their historic significance. The panel evaluates whether changes are consistent with preservation standards and the broader goal of maintaining the architectural and cultural heritage of Grants Pass.
In addition to reviewing project proposals, the commission works to promote awareness of historic preservation throughout the community. Members may collaborate with property owners, local organizations, and other governmental agencies on issues involving preservation planning and education. The body also identifies buildings, sites, and areas that may hold historic or archaeological importance, helping ensure that such resources are recognized and considered in planning and development decisions.
Commissioners are volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to public service. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Because this seat is reserved for a representative of the local historical society, candidates should have a connection to or involvement with that organization and an interest in preserving the city’s historic assets.
Applications are available through the City Administration Office, located at 101 N.W. A Street, and may also be completed online through the city’s official website. All application materials must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026.
The selection process will begin with a review of applications by the Historical Buildings and Sites Commission on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Qualified applicants will then be invited to interview with the Grants Pass City Council during a Council Workshop scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026. The final appointment is expected to be made at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
City officials encourage residents with a passion for local history and preservation to consider applying. The commission’s work shapes how Grants Pass balances growth with stewardship of its historic places, ensuring that future development respects the stories and structures that define the community’s past.
