Josephine County voters deserve better than what they are receiving from the Central Committee of the Josephine County Republican Party.
The committee’s “only vote for these candidates” approach is not voter education. It is an attempt to control which Republican candidates the public hears about and, ultimately, how they vote. When party leaders promote only their preferred candidates while completely ignoring other Republicans on the ballot, they are withholding information that voters need in order to make informed decisions. County residents deserve more than a handpicked list designed to steer their votes.
What concerns me even more is the committee’s apparent willingness to disregard the bylaws of the Oregon Republican Party and the Republican National Committee while suggesting it can create its own version of what the Republican Party should represent. Political parties are built on established rules, principles, and transparency, not on the preferences of a small group deciding for everyone else.
This sends an unfortunate message that party insiders know better than the voters themselves and that ordinary Republicans cannot be trusted to evaluate every candidate on the ballot. I reject that notion. Voters are fully capable of listening to candidates, comparing their qualifications, examining their records, and deciding for themselves who best represents their values.
The Central Committee certainly has the right to endorse candidates after the primary election. However, an endorsement is very different from pretending that other Republican candidates do not exist. Erasing fellow Republicans from the conversation does a disservice not only to those candidates but also to every voter seeking complete and accurate information before casting a ballot.
Unfortunately, this is not a new pattern. In past elections, the committee has promoted carefully selected slates after a small, self-appointed group determined who was “Republican enough” to receive its approval. Josephine County has lived with the consequences of those decisions, and many residents have become increasingly frustrated and alienated by a process that appears more interested in controlling outcomes than encouraging open participation.
A healthy Republican Party should welcome informed voters, encourage debate, and trust its members to make their own decisions. It should never fear allowing every Republican candidate an equal opportunity to present their qualifications and ideas to the public.
The voters of Josephine County deserve the complete picture, not a carefully edited version chosen for them. Let every Republican candidate be heard, and let the people decide.
