Drivers and downtown businesses in Grants Pass, Oregon should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions beginning Monday, March 16, as two separate public infrastructure projects prompt short-term road closures in different areas of the city. The closures are part of ongoing development and utility work designed to improve public spaces and underground infrastructure.
One of the most significant closures will occur in the downtown core, where G Street between 4th Street and 6th Street will be closed to all traffic starting March 16. The closure is tied to continued construction of the Owl Plaza project, an effort aimed at transforming a section of downtown into a redesigned public gathering space. The street closure is expected to remain in place until April 10 while construction crews complete work associated with the project.
During this period, motorists will not be able to access that segment of G Street, and traffic patterns may shift as construction progresses through different phases. Businesses located near the project area may see changing access points while crews work on improvements tied to the plaza development. City officials and project contractors have indicated they will continue coordinating with nearby businesses and property owners to reduce disruptions as much as possible while the work is underway.
The Owl Plaza construction represents one of several recent efforts to revitalize downtown areas of Grants Pass through pedestrian-friendly improvements and updated public infrastructure. Closing the roadway allows crews to safely complete excavation, structural work, and other construction tasks necessary to advance the project without exposing drivers or pedestrians to active work zones.
At the same time, a separate but shorter utility project will affect another part of the city during the same week. Manzanita Avenue will be closed to through traffic between 6th Street and Washington Boulevard on Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17. The closure will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days while crews install new sewer infrastructure beneath the roadway.
Unlike the downtown closure, the Manzanita Avenue project will allow limited local access for residents and nearby properties during construction hours. However, through traffic will be restricted, and detours will be established to guide drivers around the work zone. Officials advising motorists say drivers should plan alternate routes when possible to avoid congestion in the surrounding area.
The sewer installation project requires excavation and underground pipe work that makes it unsafe for vehicles to pass through the construction zone. As a result, even emergency vehicles will not be permitted to travel through the closed portion of Manzanita during the scheduled work hours. Utility contractors will be responsible for traffic control and maintaining detour signage throughout the project.
Infrastructure projects such as sewer installations and downtown redevelopment often require temporary disruptions in traffic patterns, but city officials emphasize that these improvements are part of long-term efforts to modernize Grants Pass infrastructure while supporting future economic activity in the city’s commercial areas.
Residents and commuters traveling through downtown or near Manzanita Avenue during the week of March 16 are encouraged to stay aware of posted detours and allow additional travel time when moving through affected neighborhoods.
Construction crews will continue working according to the scheduled timelines, with the sewer installation expected to be completed within two days and the Owl Plaza-related closure remaining in place until early April as downtown improvements move forward.
