In a unanimous decision on August 21, 2024, the Grants Pass City Council voted 8-0 to purchase 8.3 acres of land in northwest Grants Pass. This property, located along Washington Boulevard and Midland Avenue, with a portion fronting 6th Street, was acquired for $2 million. Known as the Washington Campus, the site was once home to a hospital and medical facilities. It now lies within the city’s Urban Renewal Area.
The Council first discussed the purchase during an executive session on June 21, 2024, directing staff to negotiate the $2 million deal for the 23 tax lots, which are zoned R-4 and General Commercial. The property owners accepted the city’s offer, and a Purchase and Sale Agreement was finalized. The city now has a 60-day due diligence period to appraise the property and conduct a Phase 1 environmental assessment, both of which are currently in progress.
This acquisition aligns with the City Council’s goal of addressing the local housing shortage, especially for those earning 80% or below the Area Median Income (AMI). Grants Pass currently faces a deficit of approximately 2,000 housing units for this income bracket. The Council has prioritized the development of transitional, low, moderate, and workforce housing on the site.
In a separate move, the City Council also approved the purchase of a .3-acre parcel at 601 SE I Street. This property, adjacent to an existing city-owned parcel, is zoned for Business Park use. The additional land will expand the city’s “yard,” where Public Works vehicles and shop facilities are housed.
These strategic property acquisitions reflect the City Council’s ongoing efforts to address housing needs and improve city infrastructure.
