Drivers in northwest Grants Pass should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions next week as a section of NW Hawthorne Avenue is scheduled to close for underground utility installation work.
According to a road closure notice issued by the City of Grants Pass, NW Hawthorne Avenue will be closed to through traffic between North Hill Drive and NW Vine Street beginning Monday, June 1, and continuing through Thursday, June 4. Construction activities are scheduled to take place each day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The closure is necessary to allow crews to safely complete underground utility improvements in the area. While the project is expected to create short-term inconveniences for motorists, city officials say the work is an important part of maintaining and improving local infrastructure that supports residential and commercial development throughout the community.
During the four-day construction period, motorists traveling through the neighborhood should expect detours and potential delays. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and use alternate routes whenever possible to avoid congestion near the work zone.
Residents living within the affected area may experience increased construction activity during daytime hours as crews work to complete the installation. Traffic control measures will be in place to help guide motorists safely around the closure and to ensure the safety of workers operating in and around the roadway.
Unlike some road construction projects that completely restrict access, emergency vehicles will still be permitted to pass through the closure area when necessary. Maintaining emergency access remains a priority throughout the duration of the project to ensure public safety services can continue without interruption.
Street and utility projects are a common part of seasonal construction efforts across Grants Pass, particularly during the warmer months when weather conditions are favorable for excavation and underground infrastructure work. These projects often involve temporary road closures but are intended to improve long-term reliability and service for area residents.
City officials remind drivers to remain alert when approaching construction zones, obey all posted signs and traffic control devices, and exercise caution when traveling near workers and equipment.
The closure is expected to remain in effect only during the designated construction hours each day, with work scheduled to conclude by the afternoon of June 4, weather and project conditions permitting.
