Josephine County’s latest grant debacle has shifted yet again, and what once appeared to be a resolved issue has now dissolved into a fog of confusion and contradictory information. The controversial allocation of sixty-two thousand dollars to Patriot Solutions, LLC was initially understood to have been withdrawn, and Commissioner Ron Smith confirmed the deal was effectively dead following a county review of the circumstances surrounding the award. However, new information now reveals there has been significant miscommunication and misunderstanding about whether the payment has truly been halted. County officials are reportedly still examining the matter and have not reached a final determination, leaving residents to ask what is really happening inside Josephine County government.
This new uncertainty comes on top of a process already riddled with red flags. Even if the withdrawal ultimately stands, it does not erase how deeply flawed the approval was from the outset. Nor does it soften the troubling signs of favoritism, cronyism and systemic failure that emerged the moment the proposal surfaced. The Patriot Solutions episode revealed a county government willing to move taxpayer money without documentation, without transparency and without the safeguards expected of any legitimate grant process.
The contrast between applicants illustrates the broader issue. Local economic development professional Tony Webb submitted a complete proposal on October thirty-first, followed by a detailed presentation and full budget documentation on December first. Her request of fifty thousand dollars for six months included clear goals, scope, metrics, timelines and demonstrated qualifications. Everything expected of a credible public project was present, professional and measurable.
Patriot Solutions LLC presented none of this. Not a written plan. Not a defined scope. Not a single measurable outcome or budget. The ownership structure was unclear, the objectives undefined and no documentation existed showing capacity or experience. Chad Hansen and longtime associate Simon Hare originally requested one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars for twelve months of vague “economic development” activity, then reduced the ask to sixty-two thousand after discussion. Even then, no written materials accompanied the request. Hansen also openly stated he had no interest in pursuing the work unless the county financed the startup costs, raising additional concerns about sincerity and suitability.
Despite this complete lack of preparation, commissioners initially approved handing over half of the county’s total lottery-funded economic development allocation. Meanwhile, Webb—a fully prepared, qualified professional was questioned not about her work but about her social media activity, a scrutiny entirely unrelated to her proposal. No such questions were directed at Patriot Solutions. No review of their statements, background or public conduct took place. The inequity was glaring.
Only after scrutiny intensified did commissioners acknowledge new concerns, including previously undisclosed ties between Hansen and Hare. Commissioner Smith confirmed these connections were unknown to him at the time of the workshop and that the information raised immediate red flags once discovered. The county also indicated it intends to review how much grant funding Hansen and his associated companies have received over the past decade, as well as funding awarded to Hare, including the broadband grant for which no scope of work was ever provided.
Yet despite these revelations, the status of the Patriot Solutions payment remains unclear. Multiple county sources now indicate the matter is still under internal review, and no final decision has been made about whether the funds will be released. This conflicting information has amplified public concern and cast serious doubt on the transparency and competence of the county’s decision-making process.
Because the county has not definitively closed the matter, the possibility still exists that Patriot Solutions could receive funds despite the lack of documentation, lack of qualifications and lack of transparency that defined the proposal from the beginning.
Let it be stated clearly: if this grant is allowed to move forward or if any amount of money is released to Patriot Solutions, the community must demand an immediate investigation and comprehensive audit. The pattern displayed here informal approvals, inconsistent vetting, undisclosed partnerships and selective scrutiny cannot be allowed to continue. Public funds cannot serve as a private resource for political insiders. They must be governed by standards, documentation and equal treatment.
Josephine County is at a crossroads. This controversy is no longer just about one grant. It is about whether residents can trust that their government applies rules consistently, evaluates applicants fairly and protects taxpayer dollars from misuse. The preliminary withdrawal, if it is real, is welcome. But the confusion now surrounding the decision only underscores how fragile public confidence has become.
The residents of Josephine County deserve clarity. They deserve accountability. They deserve leadership that treats their money with care, rigor and respect. Whether the grant is truly withdrawn or merely paused, one truth remains: this episode demands answers, documentation and independent oversight. Only then can Josephine County begin to rebuild credibility and put an end to practices that allow such failures to occur in the first place.
