Federal law enforcement actions in East Portland drew sharp condemnation from state lawmakers Wednesday after federal agents opened fire on two Oregonians in a residential neighborhood, prompting renewed concerns over public safety, accountability, and the use of force by federal authorities operating within the city.
According to a joint statement released January 8, legislators representing the affected area responded forcefully to what they described as an alarming and dangerous escalation. The incident occurred in the Hazelwood neighborhood, a densely populated residential area in East Portland, where gunfire by federal agents unfolded during daylight hours. While details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately released in the statement, the lawmakers emphasized the seriousness of the event and its impact on local residents.
Oregon Senate Majority Leader Kayse Jama, Representative Andrea Valderrama, and Representative Lamar Wise issued a unified response denouncing the actions of the federal agents involved and criticizing what they described as a broader pattern of conduct by the Trump administration.
“Let’s be clear: the violence carried out today by federal agents in Portland is a predictable escalation of the lawlessness and recklessness we have seen from the Trump administration,” the legislators stated. “Federal agents opened fire in the Hazelwood neighborhood. That is not public safety; it is a dangerous and unacceptable use of force by a federal agency operating without accountability.”
The lawmakers framed the incident not as an isolated occurrence, but as part of a wider trend they say places communities at risk. They stressed that residents should not be subjected to fear or harm as a result of federal enforcement actions carried out in their neighborhoods.
“We stand in solidarity with all Portlanders seeking justice,” the statement continued. “Our communities are not collateral damage. Residents should not have to fear armed federal agents escalating violence in their neighborhoods.”
The legislators also linked the shooting to broader concerns about constitutional rights and the role of federal authority, arguing that aggressive tactics undermine public trust and community safety rather than strengthening it.
“This incident reflects a broader pattern: an administration that prioritizes intimidation over constitutional rights, violence over public safety, and suffering over human dignity,” they said.
In their remarks, the lawmakers characterized the shooting as a misuse of authority and called for immediate action from both local and federal leadership. They expressed support for Portland’s mayor and urged decisive steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
“This was an abuse of power, plain and simple,” the statement concluded. “We stand with the Mayor of Portland and demand that federal agents immediately cease terrorizing neighborhoods in our city and that these actions are fully investigated. Portland does not consent to federal agents bringing violence into our neighborhoods.”
The incident is expected to intensify ongoing debates over the presence and conduct of federal law enforcement in Oregon communities, particularly in residential areas. As calls for investigation grow louder, state and local officials are pressing for transparency and accountability in order to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of Portland residents.
