The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued two separate recall notices for certain dog treats due to potential Salmonella contamination, which could pose health risks to pets and their owners.
On November 22, 2024, Gaines Pet Treats, LLC announced a voluntary recall of 204 bags of its “Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips” dog treats. Each bag contains 5 ounces of product and was recalled due to concerns about possible Salmonella contamination. The following day, Carolina Prime Pet, Inc. issued a similar recall for 400 bags of its “Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips” dog treats. These bags contain 16 ounces of product and are also being recalled for the same reason.
The affected treats were distributed to Hollywood Feed retail stores across multiple states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. In addition to being available in physical stores, the products were sold online through Hollywood Feed’s website.
Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs, including symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected pets can also spread the bacteria to humans, who may experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. The FDA recommends that pet owners who purchased these products stop using them immediately and dispose of the treats safely.
Consumers are advised to monitor their pets for any signs of illness and consult a veterinarian if symptoms arise. Additionally, individuals who suspect they may have been exposed to Salmonella through handling the products should seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.
