A predawn call reporting a burning vehicle at a secluded property west of Forest Grove developed into a five-person homicide investigation spanning two states, with authorities identifying a suspect Sunday evening before confirming that he had been found dead inside a vehicle in Washington.
Five people and several domestic animals were discovered dead at the rural Washington County property Saturday, Aug. 22, setting in motion an extensive investigation involving local law enforcement, state forensic specialists and federal authorities. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday evening that investigators had identified 36-year-old Benjamin Charles Parker as the suspect in the killings.
Investigators tracked Parker to Enumclaw, Washington, where local police found him dead inside his vehicle. Authorities believe Parker died by suicide. The Sheriff’s Office has not publicly confirmed the specific means of death, and no official determination establishing a self-inflicted gunshot wound has been released.
Authorities said Parker was known to the five victims. His precise relationship to them has not been disclosed, and investigators have not announced a motive. With Parker located deceased, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.
The case began at approximately 5:27 a.m. Saturday when emergency crews were dispatched to a property at 47350 NW Otis Lane in unincorporated Washington County, west of Forest Grove. The initial emergency was reported as a vehicle fire, bringing Forest Grove Fire Department personnel to the property before the scope of the incident was known.
Firefighters arriving at the secluded location encountered human remains and circumstances that appeared suspicious. Law enforcement was summoned, and the response rapidly expanded as additional victims were discovered and authorities recognized they were dealing with a major crime scene.
Investigators ultimately confirmed that five people had been found dead along with several domestic animals. Authorities have not disclosed the number or types of animals, their causes of death or their relationship to the circumstances surrounding the human deaths.
The property presented investigators with a difficult physical environment. The rural location contains substantial acreage surrounded by vegetation, hills and wooded terrain, requiring authorities to search and document an area considerably larger than a typical residential crime scene. Drones and specialized equipment were used during the investigation, and a mobile command operation was established to coordinate personnel working at the property.
Washington County Sheriff Caprice Massey described the scene Sunday as exceptionally complex based on her more than two decades of law enforcement experience in the area. Investigators remained at the property throughout the weekend gathering evidence, documenting the scene and working to establish the sequence of events that resulted in the deaths.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Washington County Major Crimes Team, an interagency group composed of detectives from law enforcement agencies throughout the county.
The investigation has drawn resources from across Washington County and beyond. Participating agencies include police departments from Forest Grove, Beaverton, Cornelius, Hillsboro and Tigard, along with the Forest Grove Fire Department, Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office, Washington County Digital Forensics Lab, Washington County Animal Services and American Medical Response.
Oregon State Police Crime Lab personnel have assisted with forensic evidence, while the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has also participated. Authorities have not publicly detailed the reason for the ATF’s involvement, and no determination has been announced connecting explosives, firearms or an intentionally set fire to the deaths.
Specialized Washington County teams assigned to the investigation include Search and Rescue, Tactical Negotiations, Crash Analysis Reconstruction and personnel operating remotely controlled equipment. The size of the response reflects both the number of deaths and the amount of physical evidence investigators must examine while reconstructing what occurred at the property.
Residents near the property initially received a reverse emergency notification while authorities assessed the situation. That notification was later lifted. Investigators nevertheless maintained a substantial law enforcement presence around the property as evidence collection and investigative work continued.
Several significant facts surrounding the killings remain undisclosed. Authorities have not released the names or ages of the five victims, explained whether they were members of the same family or household, identified their causes of death or publicly established when the killings occurred.
Investigators have also not announced whether a weapon was recovered at the Forest Grove property, whether the vehicle fire was intentionally set or how the fire fits into the sequence of events surrounding the homicides. The discovery of Parker dead in Enumclaw answers the immediate question of his whereabouts but leaves investigators with the larger task of determining how and why five people were killed.
The Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office is participating in the investigation, and identification of the victims requires authorities to complete the appropriate notification process before their names are publicly released. Determining their causes and manners of death will also form an important part of reconstructing the events at the property.
