GRANTS PASS, OR – On May 1, 2025, local workers, families, immigrants, and students in Grants Pass will join the nationwide May Day Strong rally, an event that spans more than 340 cities across the United States. The rally, taking place at the Josephine County Courthouse from 4 to 6 PM, will serve as a powerful statement against the erosion of constitutional rights, the growing influence of billionaires, and the systemic underfunding of public services that affect everyday Americans.
The May Day Strong movement draws inspiration from the history of labor and community activism, particularly the struggles that led to crucial victories like the eight-hour workday. It is a continuation of protests and demonstrations aimed at protecting the interests of working families and ensuring that government policies serve the needs of the people, not the wealthiest among us. This year’s event comes after nationwide demonstrations on April 5th and 19th, where citizens rallied to protest federal layoffs, push for stronger union rights, and demand better protection for social programs that support millions of Americans.
As the Trump administration reaches its fourth month in office, American families are grappling with cuts to vital public programs. These include reductions to education funding for low-income students, proposed cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, as well as threats to essential public agencies like the U.S. Forest Service, the Postal Service, and Veterans Services. All of this is happening alongside the administration’s ongoing push for additional tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, fueling what many see as an unsustainable imbalance between the rich and the rest of the nation.
The May Day Strong rally is calling for sweeping changes to address these issues, with a clear focus on protecting the rights and livelihoods of working families. Rally organizers are demanding an end to the billionaire-driven corruption that has come to define the current administration, and are advocating for full funding of public schools, healthcare, and affordable housing. They also call for the protection and expansion of essential social safety nets, including Medicaid and Social Security.
Additionally, the rally will stand in solidarity with marginalized communities, particularly immigrants, Black, Indigenous, and transgender individuals, who have been increasingly targeted under the current administration. Protestors are calling for an immediate end to these attacks and the affirmation of the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of their race, immigration status, or gender identity.
The rally also highlights the importance of union protections and fair wages for all workers, regardless of their background or location. Organizers are advocating for a future where working people have the power to bargain for better conditions and compensation, without fear of retaliation or exploitation.
Environmental concerns will also be a key focus of the event, with calls to preserve public lands, protect air and water quality, and ensure that the health of the planet is not sacrificed for corporate gain. As the country continues to face mounting environmental challenges, rally participants are pushing for strong policies that prioritize sustainability and the well-being of future generations.
In Grants Pass, the May Day Strong rally is organized by Rogue Indivisible and the Josephine County Democrats. As part of a larger national movement, the local event will unite community members in solidarity with people across the country, all of whom are demanding a better future and a fairer society.
