Another familiar sign of summer is disappearing from Grants Pass as the city prepares its parks for the transition into cooler autumn weather.
The City of Grants Pass announced that the spray park at Riverside Park and the splash pad at Morrison Centennial Park will close beginning Friday, Sept. 11, marking the end of seasonal water recreation at two popular community parks.
The closures arrive as Southern Oregon moves deeper into September, when shorter daylight hours and gradually cooler temperatures begin changing how residents use the region’s outdoor recreation facilities. Spray parks and splash pads are primarily warm-weather amenities, providing children and families with outdoor water recreation during the hottest portion of the year.
At Riverside Park, the spray park has served as one of several recreational features within the city’s prominent downtown riverfront park. Morrison Centennial Park’s splash pad has provided a similar warm-weather destination for families in another section of the community. Both facilities will become unavailable beginning Friday.
The seasonal shutdown does not mean the parks themselves are closing. Riverside Park and Morrison Centennial Park will remain community recreation areas, while the water features will no longer operate following the Sept. 11 closure.
September frequently serves as a transition month across Southern Oregon. Warm afternoons can continue well into early fall, but overnight temperatures typically begin falling, daylight steadily decreases and the region gradually moves away from the sustained heat associated with July and August. The seasonal change also brings adjustments to outdoor recreation as communities prepare public facilities for colder and wetter conditions later in the year.
For Grants Pass families, the closure effectively brings another summer recreation season to an end. The fountains, sprays and ground-level water features that provided relief during hot afternoons will give way to the more traditional park activities associated with autumn.
The City of Grants Pass did not announce a reopening date with its closure notice. Seasonal water facilities generally remain inactive through the colder months before returning when warmer weather and operating schedules permit.
Until Friday’s closure, residents have a brief final opportunity to use the water features before they are shut down for the season.
With autumn approaching and Southern Oregon’s weather beginning its annual transition, the closing of the Riverside Park spray park and Morrison Centennial Park splash pad provides one of the community’s first visible markers that the summer recreation calendar is drawing to a close.
