Grants Pass, OR — The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol has issued an important notice regarding the upcoming Boatnik Races, scheduled to take place from May 24 to May 27, 2024. During this period, specific sections of the Rogue River will be closed to all unauthorized watercraft to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
River Closures and Schedule:
- Friday, May 24, 2024: The river will be closed from 6:00 PM to 10:15 PM, spanning from Baker Park to Sixth Street Bridge.
- Saturday, May 25, 2024: The closure will be in effect from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, covering the same stretch from Baker Park to Sixth Street Bridge.
- Sunday, May 26, 2024: The river will again be closed from 12:00 PM to 10:15 PM from Baker Park to Sixth Street Bridge.
- Monday, May 27, 2024: There will be two closures; from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM between Baker Park and Sixth Street Bridge, and from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM from Baker Park to Robertson Bridge.
Safety Regulations:
- Spectators are required to remain off the water during race times and must keep a distance of 50 feet from the waterway at all times.
- Only Law Enforcement, Rescue Personnel, and Authorized Race Officials are allowed to operate on the water during the designated closure periods. Private boats are not permitted to assist in crash or rescue operations.
- Boats may be anchored on the shoreline if deemed safe by Race Officials and Law Enforcement. All boats must be off the water and in an approved area one hour before the start of the race.
- Unauthorized boats found on the water during closures may face citations for Reckless and Unsafe Operation (ORS 830.315 & 305) and a fine of $440.
Enforcement: Law Enforcement will be actively patrolling the waterways throughout the race events to ensure compliance with these regulations. The measures are implemented to enhance the safety of the races and prevent any accidents or disruptions during the event.
