Southern Oregon is entering a stretch of unusually warm and stable weather as the region moves into the third week of March. From Sunday, March 15 through Sunday, March 22, residents and travelers throughout the Rogue Valley and surrounding areas can expect several days of mild temperatures, generally clear skies, and favorable travel conditions across much of the region.
The week begins with a noticeable shift toward warmer temperatures. Daytime highs across communities such as Grants Pass, Medford, and Ashland are expected to climb quickly into the 70s by Sunday afternoon, signaling the start of a warming trend that will continue through the early and middle portion of the week. Overnight temperatures will remain cool but comfortable, generally dropping into the low to mid-40s across valley locations.
By Monday and Tuesday, temperatures are expected to continue rising as a broad area of high pressure settles over the Pacific Northwest. Afternoon highs throughout the Rogue Valley could approach or exceed the 80-degree mark during the warmest parts of the week, creating conditions more typical of late spring than mid-March. Morning hours will remain crisp and cool, providing a noticeable contrast between early and late day temperatures.
The warm and stable weather pattern will also create generally excellent travel conditions throughout southern Oregon. Major transportation corridors such as Interstate 5 between Ashland, Medford, and Grants Pass are expected to remain dry with clear visibility during most daytime hours. U.S. Highway 199 between Grants Pass and the Oregon coast should also see smooth travel conditions, with only occasional morning fog possible in low-lying areas.
Drivers traveling through higher elevations should still remain attentive to changing conditions, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. While the warming temperatures will promote gradual snowmelt in mountain areas, cooler nighttime temperatures can still allow for isolated icy patches in shaded sections of mountain highways. This is most likely to occur near Siskiyou Summit along Interstate 5 and in portions of the Cascades where winter snowpack remains present.
As the week progresses into Wednesday and Thursday, the warm pattern is expected to persist with mostly sunny skies and continued dry conditions across much of southern Oregon. Afternoon temperatures will remain well above typical March averages, encouraging increased outdoor activity throughout the region. Parks, riverfront trails, and recreation areas along the Rogue River are likely to see an increase in visitors as residents take advantage of the early taste of spring.
Mountain recreation areas may also experience increased traffic as warmer weather draws visitors into higher elevations. However, conditions in these areas can still vary widely depending on elevation, and snow or muddy trail conditions may still exist in forested regions and along mountain slopes.
By Friday and into the weekend, temperatures are expected to gradually settle back toward seasonal norms while remaining comfortably mild. Daytime highs are projected to remain in the upper 60s to low 70s across most valley communities, with overnight temperatures dipping into the upper 30s and low 40s.
Heading into next Sunday, March 22, the overall weather pattern across southern Oregon is expected to remain relatively stable. While early spring weather can shift quickly, current conditions point toward another calm and dry weekend with mild temperatures and generally favorable travel conditions throughout the region. For residents and visitors alike, the coming week offers a welcome stretch of pleasant weather across southern Oregon as the region continues its transition from winter toward spring.
